IT WAS him. Joe as a young man. He was stepping through the void onto a background, a world that was slowly being colored in about him. He was fifteen now, maybe sixteen, coming into his own in looks and a kindling of maturity. He stood naked in a bedroom, not his own, bathed in morning light. It was light that washed away the troubles of the night. The glow from the early dawn cascaded over his young body, so clean and untouched.

Outside the window was a beautiful garden, and there was a woman with a floppy hat bending and tending to its various vegetables and flowers. Joe closed the blinds again so that she could not see. She must be made to think they were just sleeping in, he thought.

In the bed, toward which Joe now looked, was another young man staring at him. His lovely auburn head of hair rested on a folded arm, and a beatific grin lifted up the morning doubt. The young man gestured Joe back to the bed and, a little hesitant, Joe climbed between the sheets, and they fumbled about into new, more adventurous territories.

The Watching Joe, he who was but a presence in the memory, now remembered the sensations. The first hot and cool of it. The prickling of the skin like porcupines in heat. And then that first release of blinding white delight.

Declan. This was Declan. The one to whom he had handed over his first cry of intimate joy. Brothers, they were. Brothers in The Secret. A glorious secret told in wide-eyed wonderment.

Suddenly, even as he sighed in recognition at the scene in front of him, Joe found himself elsewhere. No longer was he in the arms of a first lust. No, now he was sitting quite still beside his mother. His own sweet, kind mother, Veronica, who knew hidden things about him before he could ever figure them out. Who had a knowledge of what made him different from the other boys. She and he were listening to, or hearing, a man lecture in a church. He spoke earnestly. He spoke pleadingly at no one in particular about certain ills. No one in particular, and yet Joe felt all eyes on him as the sermon went on about the evils of homosexuality. Even then the word “evil” sounded to him like a stiff clunker of a word from some antiquarian dictionary. The man lectured endlessly, it seemed. Lessons taken from Biblical stories, warped and twisted beyond any intent. Joe gritted his teeth in discomfort and pain, terrified at the prospect that, at the moment, he was the most hated young man in the world. That even God hated him, and for nothing he ever had any control over. He wanted to cry but could only bite his lip to stifle the ripping emotion.

But then he realized with some relief that he wasn’t alone, really. There was at least one other who knew what that layered barrage of resentment felt like.
